What is Meckel’s diverticulum?
A
- = Congenital intestinal diverticulum

Pathophys of Meckel’s diverticulum?
A
- Failure of the omphalomesenteric duct (vitello-intestinal duct) to obliterate
- Leading to heterotopic gastric tissue (pancreatic tissue and gastric tissue)
- It is a true diverticulum, including all layers of the small intestine.

What is the Rule of 2’s re: Meckel’s?
A
- Most common in children < 2 years of age
- 2 times more common in males
- 2 types of tissue - mostly (pancreatic and gastric)
- 2 inches long
- Found within 2 feet of the ileocaecal valve
- Occurs in 2% of the population

Possible complications with Meckel’s
A
- Intestinal obstruction
- Diverticulitis
- Perforation

Ix of choice for Meckel’s
A
• Meckel scintigraphy to detect ectopic gastric tissue

Usually presentation of Meckel’s
A
• Asymptomaticmostly
- Rectal bleeding (usually painless)
- Melaena/haematochezia
- Most common
- Self-limiting, bright red
