A
is the result of an incomplete fusion of the omphalomesenteric duct during embryonic development. This causes a fibrous band to connect the small intestine to the umbilicus, known as a Meckel diverticulum.

S/S
A
- bleeding
- anemia
- severe colicky abdominal pain
- abdominal distention
- guarding (tensing of the abdominal wall muscles)
- rebound tenderness

Management/Tx:
A
Management:
- stool for occult blood tests
- CBC (anemia)
- meckel scan
Tx:
- surgery is necessary to remove the diverticulum
- ileal resection may be necessary
- blood products for anemia
- IV fluids

Complications
A
bleeding, anemia, and intestinal obstruction such as volvulus and intussusception, half of which occur within the first 2 years of life
