Mechanisms of Breathing Flashcards
Function of respiratory system
Supply body with o2 taken from atmospheric air and dispose of co2 - RESPIRATION.
What 4 stages are involved in respiration?
- Ventilation
- External respiration
- Gas transport *
- Internal respiration *
* Respiratory system not responsible for these stages
What is ventilation?
Movement of air in & out of lungs
What is external respiration?
Diffusion of o2 from lungs to blood and co2 from blood to lungs.
How do the dimensions of the thorax change during ventilation?
Vertical, transverse & antero-posterior diameter increase during inspiration.
These diameters DECREASE during expiration.
What are the MOB during inspiration?
Ribs move up & out, diaphragm descends, sternum moves out.
What are the MOB during exhalation?
Ribs move down & in, diaphragm ascends, sternum moves in.
What muscles are involved in breathing?
Intercostals, diaphragm
external intercostals help produce inhalation
What is the relationship between volume & pressure and what law is this known as?
As volume increases, pressure decreases = BOYLE’S LAW
