Mechanisms Flashcards
What is a mechanism
A mechanism is a system of moving parts that perform some function. they’re used to reduce the effort in relation to work
What are types of mechanisms
Leverages and linkages
Wheels
Pulleys
Gears
What are the 3 basic building blocks of mechanical control
Input
Process
Output
What is the input
The input is usually a force and initiates the process
What is the process
The process will change the magnitude or direction of the force
What is the output
The output performs the desired task
A mechanism:
Has a input, process and a output
Can change the direction in which a force acts
Can change the size of the force
Can change the place where the force acts
What is a lever
A lever is a type of mechanism
What are the 3 basic parts of a lever
The fulcrum, the load and the effort
What is a class 1 lever
It has the load first then the fulcrum and finally the effort
What is a class 2 lever
A class 2 lever has the fulcrum first and then 5h e-learning and finally the effort
What is a class 3 lever
A class 3 lever has the fulcrum first then the effort and finally the load
What are gears
Gears are wheels with teeth which mesh together to transmit rotary motion. When two or more gears mesh it is called a gear train
What are the 2 types of gears
Compound and simple
What are other types of gears
Rack and pinion
Worm and wheel
Bevel gears
What does a rack and pinion Gear do
It converts rotary motion into linear motion
What does the worm and wheel gear do
The worm and wheel is usually found in an electric motor
For one rotation of the worm the wheel is moved by one tooth
What does a bevel gear do
Gears are cone shaped. The angles is known as a bevel gear. They transfer rotary motion through 90 degrees
What is linear motion
A straight line motion
What reciprocating motion
Straight line backwards and forwards
What is rotary motion
The motion goes round and round
What is a oscillating motion
It’s swings backwards and forwards
