Mechanics Year 1 Flashcards
What is the position of an object?
Position- distance from fixed origin- vector quantity … ➕ or ➖
What is the displacement of an object?
Displacement- distance from any specified point- vector quantity
.. ➕ or ➖
What is the distance travelled?
Distance travelled- total distance travelled during the motion- scalar quantity
How do you calculate velocity?
Velocity = displacement / time
How do you calculate speed?
Speed = distance travelled / time
How do you calculate acceleration?
Acceleration = change in velocity / time
How do you remember what the area under the graph and the gradient of the line represent?
D-T
V-T
A-T
DOWN AND LEFT IS GRADIENT
UP AND RIGHT IS AREA
What is Newton’s 1st law?
Every object continues in a state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted on by a resultant external force
What is Newton’s 2nd law?
Resultant force = mass ✖️ acceleration
F = MA
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
When one object exerts a force on another there is always a reaction which is equal and opposite in direction to the acting force
What does it mean if an object is in equilibrium?
1) Acceleration = 0
2) Resultant force = 0
In which direction does tension act?
ALWAYS away from the mass or object but opposite direction to weight friction etc
What letter is displacement typically denoted as?
r but I know it as s
