Mechanics - Scalars and Vectors Flashcards
1
Q
Scalar quantities
A
have magnitude not direction (e.g. distance, speed, time, mass, energy, temperature, power).
2
Q
Vector quantities
A
have magnitude and direction (e.g. displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, moment, momentum, current).
3
Q
Distance/Displacement
A
metres [m] (/+ direction)
4
Q
Speed/Velocity
A
metres per second [m s-1] (/+ direction)
5
Q
Scalar Addition
A
Magnitude = Σ values.
6
Q
Vector Addition:
A
Magnitude = Σ values (parallel) or Pythagoras’ Theorem (perpendicular). Direction = Sign (parallel) or Trigonometry (perpendicular).
7
Q
Components
A
Through the angle = cosine. Away from the angle = sine. Perpendicular vectors are mutually independent.
