Mechanics of Breathing Flashcards
Is Inspiration a Passive or active process at rest?
Inspiration is an active process at rest as the diaphragm is activly contracting to increase the thoracic cavity.
What is the first stage of inspiration at rest?
The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles contract, lifting the ribs up and outwards.
What affect does the contraction of the diaphragm and IM’s have on the thoracic cavity?
The thoractic cavity increase, which creates a lower pressure within the lungs.
What affect does a low pressure have on thoracic cavity?
Low pressure causes an increase in inspiration and diffusion rate as air moves into the lungs.
Is Expiration an active or passive process at rest?
It is a passive process
What is the first stage of expiration at rest? and what does this cause?
The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax causing a decrease in the thoracic cavity.
What effect does an decrease in the thoracic cavity cause on the pressure?
The pressure will increase meaning that air will be forced out of the lungs.
During exercise, is Inspiration an active or passive process?
An active process as air is being forced out of the lungs.
What is the first stage of Inspiration during exercise?
The diaphragm and external intecostal muscles contract, causing an increase in the thoracic cavity.
What does an increase in the thoracic cavity cause on partial pressure?
Causes air to move into the lungs quickly due to increase in diffusion gradient
Is expiration an active or passive process during exercise?
Expiration is an active process during exercise
What is the first stage, of expiration during exercise?
The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles will relax and the internal intercostal will contract to force more air into the lungs.
