Mechanics Definitions Flashcards
What is Newton’s First Law?
An object continues to be in a state of rest or move with constant velocity unless a resultant force acts upon it
What is Newton’s Second Law?
The rate of change of momentum of an object is proportional to the resultant force which acts upon the object
F = ma
What is Newton’s Third Law?
To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What does particle mean in mechanics?
Dimensions of the object are negligible
What does light object mean in mechanics?
Mass of the object is small compared to other masses
What is air resistance in mechanics?
resistance experienced by objects travelling through the air
What a force?
A push, pull, twist, bend or shear that is measured in N or kgms-2
What is the value of g in maths?
9.8 ms-2
What is centre of mass?
The point of the object where the entire weight appears to act
What are scalar quantities?
distance, speed
What are vector quantities?
displacement, velocity
