Mechanics Chapter 10 Forces and Motion Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object at rest will stay at rest, an object moving with constant velocity will continue to move with constant velocity unless an unbalanced force acts on the object
What does a resultant force acting on an object cause?
The object to accelerate in the same direction as the resultant force
How can you find the resultant of two or more forces given as vectors?
Adding the vectors
What does Newton’s second law state?
The force needed to accelerate a particle is equal to the product of the mass of the particle and the acceleration produced
F = ma
What type of problems can you use F = ma to solve?
Problems involving vector forces acting on particles
How do you solve problems involving connected particles?
Considering the particles separately (or as a single particle if they are moving in the same straight line)
Why is it important that a pulley is smooth?
The tension in the string will be the same on both sides of the pulley
What does Newton’s third law state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
