mechanics and materials Flashcards
difference between scalars and vectors
- scalars: magnitude only
- vectors: magnitude and direction
examples of scalar quantities
- distance
- speed
- mass
- temperature
examples of vector quantites
- displacement
- velocity
- force/weight
- acceleration
how do you find the resultant vector?
pythagoras (only when perpendicular)
how do you find the direction of a vector?
trigonometry (only when perpendicular)
when would you use a scale drawing?
when the vectors have angles other than 90
how do you resolve vectors?
- trigonometry
- horizontal (Fcosθ)
- vertical (Fsinθ)
how can you show an object is in equilibrium?
- horizontal and vertical components equal zero
- scale drawing shows a closed triangle
what is a moment?
- M=fd
- force multiplied by perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the point
what is a couple?
- pair of coplanar forces
- equal in magnitude
- work in opposite directions
how to find the moment of a couple?
force multiplied by perpendicular distance between lines of action of forces
what is the principle of moments?
for an object in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments about a pivot is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments
what is the centre of mass?
point at which an object’s mass acts
mass of a uniform object
exactly in the centre
