Mechanics Flashcards
What does newtons 1st law state?
An object will remain at a state of rest or constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force.
What does newtons 2nd law state?
The net force acting on an object is proportional to the rate of change of momentum and is in the same direction.
What does newtons 3rd law state?
When two objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces on eachother.
What is impulse?
The average net force acting on an object multiplied by the time it acts on it, also known as the change in momentum.
How do you find the impulse on a force against time graph?
The area under the graph.
What is the principle of the conservation of momentum?
The total momentum in a system remains unchanged unless a ted upon by an external force.
What happens during a perfectly elastic collision?
• Kinetic energy conserved.
• Momentum conserved.
What happens during a perfectly inelastic collision?
• Momentum is conserved.
