Mechanics Flashcards
Acceleration
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity per unit time
Newton’s law 1
A body will remain in a state of rest or travelling at a constant velocity
unless an external, force acts upon it
Newton’s Law 2
When an unbalanced force acts on a body, the rate of change of
momentum is directly proportional to the force and takes place in the direction of the force
Newton’s Law 3
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, action and reaction
dont take place on the same body
Pressure
Pressure is force per unit area (liquid=pgh)
Archimede’s principle
states that when an object is partially or fully submerged in a liquid
the upthrust it experiences is equal in magnitude to the weight of the
liquid displaced
Law of flotation
states that the weight of the floating body is equal to the weight of the
fluid displaced
Boyle’s Law
states that pressure is inversely proportional to volume, for a fixed
mass of gas at a constant temperature
Newton’s Law of gravitation
states that any two point masses in the universe attract each other
with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
Moment
Force x Perpendicular distance (fd)
Couple
Two parallel forces with the same magnitude acting in opposite directions
Torque
(moment of a couple)=Fd
