MECHANICS 1 Flashcards
ACCELERATION
rate of change of velocity (ms-2) vector
AVERAGE SPEED
measure of the total distnace travelled in a unit time
BRAKING DISTANCE
the distance a vehicle traveles while decelerating to a stop
BRITTLE
material that distorts very little even when subject to large stress and does not exhibit andy plastic deformation
CENTRE OF GRAVITY
point at which the entire weight of an object can be considered to act
COMPRESSIVE FORCE
two + forces that have the effect of reducing the volume of the object on which they are acting, or reducing the length of a spring
COUPLE
2 forces that are equal and opposite to each other but not in the same straight line
DENSITY
mass oer unit volume (kgm-3) scalar
DISPLACEMENT ( s or x)
distance travelled in a particular direction (m) vector
DISTANCE (d)
how far one position is from another (m) scalar
DRAG
the resistive force that acts on a body when it moves through a fluid
DRAG COEFFICIENT
characteristics that determines the amount of drag that acts on an object
DRIFT VELOCITY
average velocity of an electrom as it travels through a wire due to p.d.
DUCTILE
materials that have a large plastic region & can be drawn into a wire
ELASTIC DEFORMATION
object will return to its original shape when the deforming force is removed
