Q

Pressures

A
  • PEEP
  • positive end expiratory pressure
  • keeps the alveoli open during inspiration and prevents alveolar collapse

6
Q

AC

A
  • Tidal volume and ventilatory rate are set
  • Patient can initiate breathing or can ride the vent
  • If patient breaths too fast, it can result in respiratory alkalosis (each time patient breaths, vent pushes a present tidal volume)

Q

SIMV

A
  • Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation
  • Allows patient to breath spontaneously
  • Usually used during weaning

8
Q

Pressure Support

A
  • Used to wean patients from ventilator
  • Patient must be capable of spontaneous breathing
  • only light sedation is permitted (why?)
  • used to assist the patient respiratory effort
  • Weaned ASAP

Q

Sedation while on vent

A
  • Reduce anxiety, pain, and agitation
  • Improved oxygenation (How>)
  • Goldilock principle: undersedation? over sedation?
