Mechanical Ventilation Flashcards
1
Q
Variables
A
- PEEP
- Time
- Volume
2
Q
Pressures
A
- PEEP
- positive end expiratory pressure
- keeps the alveoli open during inspiration and prevents alveolar collapse
3
Q
Time
A
- Breaths per minute
4
Q
Volume
A
- Tidal volume calculated based on weight
5
Q
Common Modes
A
- AC
- SIMV
- Pressure Support
- Sedation while on vent
6
Q
AC
A
- Tidal volume and ventilatory rate are set
- Patient can initiate breathing or can ride the vent
- If patient breaths too fast, it can result in respiratory alkalosis (each time patient breaths, vent pushes a present tidal volume)
7
Q
SIMV
A
- Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation
- Allows patient to breath spontaneously
- Usually used during weaning
8
Q
Pressure Support
A
- Used to wean patients from ventilator
- Patient must be capable of spontaneous breathing
- only light sedation is permitted (why?)
- used to assist the patient respiratory effort
- Weaned ASAP
9
Q
Sedation while on vent
A
- Reduce anxiety, pain, and agitation
- Improved oxygenation (How>)
- Goldilock principle: undersedation? over sedation?
