mechanical ventilation Flashcards
1
Q
carina
A
point at which the trachea divides into right and left bronchi
2
Q
pulmonary shunt
A
% total blood flow that bypasses lung gas exchange sites (alveoli) while passing from right to left heart
- adds poorly oxygenated to oxygenated blood
3
Q
tension pneumothorax
A
progressive build-up of air in pleural space, usually due to lung laceration allowing air to escape but not return (“one way valve”)
- positive pressure vent may exacerbate
- obstructs venous return to heart
4
Q
chest tube
A
drain in pleural space to allow closed-chest drainage
- restores intrapleural pressure
- allows re-expansion of lung
