Mechanical Properties Of Metal Flashcards

1
Q

What is ductility? Which tests are used in conjunction with ductility?

A

Ductility is the ability of a material to stretch and deform under load without breaking. You either use the bend test or tensile test to express that amount. Ductility == Elongation

Q

Define tensile strength.

A

Is it the ultimate pull that a material can stand. It’s measured in pounds per square inch (psi) or megapascals (MPa)

Q

What is brittleness?

A

It’s the tendency of a material to fail suddenly by breaking, without any permanent deformation before failure. A good example is white cast iron.

Q

What is hardness? Which tests are used to measure this?

A

It’s the ability of a materials to resist penetration, indentation, scratching, and abrasion. The Rockwell and Brinell(ball) hardness tests are used. ASIDE: In steels, hardness is influenced by carbon content.

Q

What is toughness? Describe one method to increase the toughness of metal.

A

It’s the ability of a metal to withstand a rapidly applied load without breaking. High impact strength (lack of brittleness) == Good indication of toughness.

Tempering is used to draw out some of the hardness of the metal through controlled heating of the hardened area.

EXAMPLE: Spring

Q

What is elasticity?

A

It’s the ability of metal to return to its original shape and dimensions once the load has been removed.

Q

What is malleability?

A

It’s the ability of the metal to be cold-worked without a great deal of resistance. Some methods include rolling, pressing, forging.

Q

What is yield strength?

A

It’s the stress point of a metal where permanent deformation takes place. == Elastic limit.

Q

What is impact strength? What are two common tests for determining this value?

A

Impact strength == fracture toughness. It’s the ability of a metal to withstand a sharp, high-velocity blow.

Measured in: foot-pounds or joules.

Izod and Charpy tests use a weighted, swinging pendulum to break a notched specimen.
