Mechanical Properties Flashcards
What is elastic deformation
Upon removal of the applied load, material returns to original state
What is plastic deformation
Upon removal of the applied loads, the material does not return to original state
What is fracture
Define the separation of the material in tow or more pieces after loading
Define strength
Ability of a material to withstand an applied loadwithout fracture
Stiffness
Ability to withstand deformation
Toughness
Ability to absorb energy up to fracture or the work required to cause the material to fracture
Ductility
Measure of the degree of plastic deformation at fracture.
Hardness
Measure of the materials resistance to localised plastic deformation
Affect of grain boundaries on hardness
More grain boundaries, harder the material
