Mechanical Principles Flashcards
What is mechanical efficiency?
Where the input and output energy is compared
What is a pascal?
A unit of pressure / stress in Pa
What is a class 1 lever?
Where the load and effort are on opposite sides of the fulcrum
What are class 2 levers?
Where the load and effort are on the same side of the fulcrum
What are class 3 levers?
Where the load and effort are on the same side of the fulcrum however the effort is closer to the fulcrum that the load
Why don’t class 3 levers have an mechanical advantage?
Because the fulcrum cannot be moved
How can you calculate mechanical advantage?
Load / effort
What are the 2 types of gears?
Simple and compound
What are simple gears?
the first shaft (driver) rotates and interlocks with the driven gear transmitting motion
What are compound gears?
A larger gear will have a smaller gear inside of it which drives the larger gear
What is the gear ratio?
Teeth on driven / teeth on driver
What is output speed?
Input speed / gear ratio
What are pulleys used for?
Changing direction of rotation, torque and the speed of an object
Which size pulley wheel will spin the fastest?
Smaller
What is the velocity ratio and how can you calculate it?
The difference in speed between pulley wheels
Diameter of driven pulley / diameter of driver pulley
