Mechanical Braking System Flashcards
What does the braking system provide the operator with?
A means of slowing down and stopping the ASE
The ability to prevent ASE movement when parking
What is the braking system controlled by?
Foot pedal or hand lever
What is the foot pedal and hand lever designed to do?
Give leverage that creates a mechanical advantage to which reduces driver effort
What do the adjustable rods do?
Link the cross shaft to the brake operating levers
Why is adjustment required with the rods?
To help achieve balanced braking
What do the elongated holes allow?
Independent movement of each control
What does the cross shaft do?
Balances the application of the brakes to all four wheels
What do wrongly adjusted rods do?
Cause ASE to pull to the left or right
What are placed to take up any unequal adjustment?
Compensators
What do fully compensated braking systems ensure?
Each brake is applied at the same time
Each brake receives its equal share of braking effort
Where are the 3 common compensator locations?
Front (balance front brakes)
Rear (to balance rear brakes)
Centre (to equalise front and rear)
What does the back plate do?
Attaches to the axle and provides a base for mounting other brake components
Acts as a seal to stop ingress of dirt and water
How is the brake shoe anchor attached?
Bolted or riveted
What does the brake shoe anchor do?
Prevents the shoes rotating in the drum
Provides leverage for shoes to act against
What does the integral adjuster do?
Adjust the shoe drum clearance
What does the cam expander do?
Provides a locating point for the brake shoes
Provides leverage to force the brake shoes against the brake drum
What are the 3 main components of the brake shoe?
Lining table
Web
Lining
How is the friction lining attached to the outer surface?
Bonded or riveted
What do the steady posts do?
Use to position the brake shoe square to the back plate and drum
Ensure maximum area of contact between shoe and drum
What does the positioning of the brake drum allow?
Good flow or air to dissipate heat
What is a disadvantage of drum shoe brakes?
Brake fade
What is brake fade?
Brake components especially the friction linings become too hot
What is the result of brake fade?
Driver has to apply a greater effort, in extreme cases it is almost impossible to stop the vehicle
What do the return springs do?
Fitted to return the brake shoes to the off position, may also hold the brakes firmly against the anchorage and back plate
What type of mechanism does the handbrake use?
Pawl and ratchet
What is the name of the handbrake which acts on the output shaft of the gearbox?
Transmission brake
