Mech 210 midterm 2 Flashcards
truss
- Truss: a structure composed of slender members joined together at their end points usually by pins. Tension or compression
zero force member
structural members that support No loading but aid in the stability of the truss.
Frame
an assembly of rigid members (of which at least one is a multi – force member) intended to be a stationary structure for supporting a load.
machine
o contain moving parts and are designed to transmit and alter the effect of forces (structure / configuration change)
o At least one multi force member
o secondary objects can be seen to make it static
Beam
Beams: structural members designed to support loadings applied perpendicular to their axes
Difference between truss frame machine beam
Truss only 2 force members
Frame is stationary
Machine contains moving parts that alter effect of force
Beam is just one member
Shear force
Internal force acting parallel to member which resists the relative translation between the segments on both sides of the shear force
Centroid
Geometric center of the area under a distributed loading curve. Point where resultant force of distributed loading acts
Bending moment
Internal moment in a member which resists the bending of the member (relative rotation of a cross-section of a member)
