Measuring the speed of sound Flashcards
1
Q
How do you measure the speed of sound in the air?
A
- Use a stopwatch, Something to measure distance e.g. trundle wheel. 2 blocks of wood.
- Measure the time by seeing when the blocks touch each other and record the time it takes to hear the sound from that point.
- Take multiple readings and find the average
Calculate the speed using V = D/T
2
Q
How can you measure the speed of sound using a wall?
A
- Measure the distance from you and the wall
- Get 2 blocks of wood and a timer.
- When you hit the block of wood, start the timer, The sound will travel away, when it comes back (Echo). do it 10 times then Stop the timer.
- Calculate the speed using S = D/T But double the distance since it travelled to the wall and back and times it by 10 since it was done 10 times.
