Measuring Lung Volume Flashcards
Tidal Volume
= volume of air exhaled and inhaled in one breath
Vital Capacity
= largest volume of air that can be moved in and out in one breath
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
= volume of air that can be breathed in above a normal breath
Expiratory Reserve Volume
= volume of air that can be breathed out above a normal breath
Residual Volume
= volume of hair that always remains in the lungs
Total Lung Capacity
= the sum of the vital capacity and the residual volume
Spirometer
When the person breathes into the spirometer the volume of the chamber increases, and when the person inhales the volume of the chamber decreases. The purpose of the soda lime is to absorb CO2 and the pen draws a graph of the person’s breathing pattern.
