- Refer to Physician’s Order
- Assemble Equipment
- Introduce self
- ID patient. (Use 2 ID; name band and ask them or staff)
- Explain Procedure
- (Asses finger. You don’t want to poke a finger that has a lot of bruises.)
- Remove protective piece from automatic lancing device.
- Wipe Side of fingertip with alcohol wipe and let dry
- If using a manual lancing device, remove cap from manual lancing device
- Place test strip into meter. Or use meter according to instruction

- Gently squeeze pt. fingertip and lance
- Wipe first drop of blood with dry tissue. (With the elderly, you do NOT want to do this. It’s already hard as it is to get a drop of blood without hurting them, let alone waste that drop of blood you already have. Just make sure you verbalize this esp. during check-off.)
- Place drop of blood onto test strip and wait the recommended time
- Document Blood glucose reading
- Discard lancet and test strip appropriately.
