MEASURES OF HEALTH STATUS Flashcards
Mortality
The death rate in a population
Morbidity
Refers to the levels of ill-health in a population or group
Health status
An individuals or populations overall level of health and wellbeing, measured by data and statistics related to health
Life expectancy
The average period that a person may expect to live if current death rates do not change
Self-assessed health status
Someone’s own subjective opinion and assessment of their overall health
Incidence
The number or rate of new cases of a disease/condition in a population during a given period.
Prevalence
The total number of cases of a disease or condition present in a population at a given time.
(you’re no longer part of the prevalence data if you are cured from the disease or you have died)
Burden of Disease
Burden of Disease measures the current health situation of the population when people are affected by illness and disease and measures the gap between this situation and an ideal situation where people live a long life of full health
DALYs
Disability adjusted life years – Is measuring the amount of healthy years lost due to living with a disability or premature death.
YLDs
Year of life lost due to a disease – The amount of healthy years lost due to living with a disability or a illness.
Eg. If someone is diagnosed of cancer at age 50 and they suffer from the disease until age 70 and they die at age 70, they have 20 years lost due to disability because that’s how many years they have lived with the disability.
YLLs
Year of Life lost – The amount of years due to premature death in comparison from their life expectancy
