Measures Flashcards
When a variable can’t be represented by single question, a _____ uses multiple items to represent that variable.
Scale or Index
A type of systematic error (a pattern of error) where a participant responds in a way that will make him/her look good.
e.g., Participants may not admit to discriminating against a person of color.
Social Desirability Bias
A type of question where participants select their answer to a question, from a list.
e.g., What part of the USA are you from?
North, South, East…. I am not from the USA.
Close-ended question
A type of systematic error (a pattern of error) where a participant either agrees or disagrees with most or all statements, regardless of its content.
e.g., On a phone interview, a person is watching TV and half listening to the questions. He answers “strongly agree” to nearly every question).
Aquiescence Bias
A type of question where participants give their own answer, in their own words.
e.g., Describe your experience taking HBSE.
Open-ended question
When a question asks for a single response to a combination of questions.
e.g., “I like rice milk and soy milk.” What if you like 1 but not the other? Avoid these types of questions.
Double-barreled question
A type of systematic error (a pattern of error) where participants may not understand the questions, due to the lack of familiarity with the language or concepts.
e.g., In a survey given to inner-city children, children use the word “break-up” when their parents separated, whether they were married or not. So, using the word “divorced” is not familiar to the children.
