Measurements And Units Of Measure Flashcards
Medical physics
A branch of applied physics which uses physical concepts and principles for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human disease and disability
SI system
(International system of units), uses a decimal basis for multiples and sub divisions of the basic units of measure, which simplifies calculations.
Physical quantities
A measurable aspect of the universe (such as length), the metric unit of measure for length is the meter
Units of measure
A definite magnitude of a quantity that is used as a standard for measurement of the same kind of quantity
derived units
Units of measure that consist of combinations of the base units
Dimension
Physical quantity that can be measured
Dimensional analysis
Procedure used to test the validity of an equation or to help us derive new equations
Significant digits
The digits in a number that carry meaning, showing how accurate or precise the number is/ it indicates the reliability of a measurement or calculation
Scientific notation
Using powers of 10 in writing a number
Order of magnitude
A numerical approximation of a number to it’s nearest power of 10
Length
The physical distance between two positions with respect to some standard of distance
Time
Shows how long something lasts with respect to how long it takes for a natural phenomenon to occur
Mass
A measure of inertia of a material relative to that of a standard one
Temperature
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in a material relative to a standard energy
Electric current (I)
A measure of the rate of charge transfer
