Measurement Concepts and Metric Conversions Flashcards
What is mass?
The amount of matter contained in a substance.
What is volume?
The amount of space an object occupies.
What is density?
The quantity of matter that is packed into a fixed space.
What is the formula for mass?
Mass= density times volume
What is the formula for density?
Density= mass divided by volume
What is the formula for volume?
Volume= mass divided by density
What tool can you use to measure mass and volume?
Mass= scale or triple balance beam Volume= ruler or graduated cylinder
What is water displacement?
Water displacement is a way to find the volume of irregularly shaped objects.
What is the density of pure water?
1 gram/mL
How do you use water displacement?
- Fill graduated cylinder with X mL of water.
- Add object and measure meniscus.
- Subtract X mL of water from volume of object and water.
What is a meniscus?
The water bubble at the top of the water level on a graduated cylinder.
