independent variable = presumed cause
variable whose change is NOT affected by change in another variable
- stays consistent thru-out experiment

dependant variable
variable whose change IS affected by change in another variable
- changes across participants in study
ex. GPA, test scores
conceptual variable = psychological construct
abstract ideas that form the basis of a research hypothesis that can’t be directly measured
ex. emotion, personality
operational variable
definition of an abstract concept used by researchers to measure/manipulate that abstract concept in a study
ex. testing memory (CV) using digit span test (OV)
reliability = consistency
measure is stable and consistent
- are ppl responding to the measure in a similar manner each time?

test-retest = over time
test scores remain consistent over time
- get the same measurement again after repeated trials
ex. height, weight, distance, temp

internal reliability = over items

ex. teaching ability is correlated w/:

ex. current mood NOT correlated to self esteem
