Measurement Flashcards
1
Q
Systematic errors
A
Occur because the instrument is in some way inaccurate
2
Q
Random errors
A
Occur due to limitations of the measuring device
3
Q
Accuracy
A
How close the measurement is to the correct value
4
Q
Precision
A
Hw close the measurements are to each other
Smallest measurable unit on the measuring device
5
Q
Uncertainty occurs…
A
Due to limitations of the measuring device (its precision)
6
Q
Percent uncertainty
A
Ratio of uncertainty to the measured value multiplied by 100%
uncertainty/value x 100%
7
Q
Percent error
A
Ratio of the difference between the accepted and measured values and the accepted value multiplied by 100%
(measured-accepted)/accepted x 100%
8
Q
Rules for Sig Figs
A
- All non zero digits
- Imbedded zeros
- Zeros trailing in a decimal
- Exact numbers are infinite
9
Q
Rules for calculating
A
- Adding/subtracting: to the decimal place of the number with the fewer decimal places)
- Multiplying/dividing: same sig figs as the smallest umber of sig figs
- Combined: multiplication/division rule
