Measure Words Flashcards
A general measure word for most nouns. It can be used for people, objects, or things that don’t have a specific measure word.
个 gè
A measure word to count pairs – just like the character itself, which consists of two identical Chinese characters. It specifically denotes a set of two matching objects. It’s one of the most common measure words for shoes in Chinese.
双 shuāng
A measure word for small animals or one of a pair.
只 zhī
A measure word for flat, thin objects, such as paper, tables, or pictures.
张 zhāng
A measure word for cups or glasses.
杯 bēi
A measure word for bound objects, such as books or notebooks.
本 běn
A measure word to count objects that can be grasped or held in one’s hand. This is because the radical 扌originally symbolizes holding something in hand. It is commonly used for objects such as chairs, knives, umbrellas, or keys.
把 bǎ
similar to the English measure word “bottle,” but can also be used to refer to jars, flasks and vases.
瓶 (píng)
Super useful measure word that’s most commonly used with clothing. It also works with certain items of furniture and luggage, as well as with abstract events.
件 (jiàn)
measure word for “narrow, winding and long” things.
条 tiáo
measure word for families or business establishments
家 jiā
Measure word for people polite, more appropriate quantifier for management and coworkers as opposed to 个 (gè.)
位 (wèi)
