Meanings P.2 Flashcards
Climate graph
displays yearly temperature + satistics for a particular loctaion
Cold front
boundry of masses of cold air
Condensation
gas to liquid
Dew
moisture of that forms as a result of condensation
Fog
When the water vapours into the air and condeses
Isobar
lines of constant or equal pressure on the map
Meteorology
study of atmosphere + the effects
Occluded front
forms when warm air mass gets caught between two cold air masses
Warm front
forms when moist, warm air masses slides up over a cold air mass
Weather station
where weather conditions + data are observed and recorded
Depression
result of mixing warm air and rising above surrounding cold air, leads to unsettled weather.
When cold air comes into contact with warm air, leads to temperature, pressure and strong winds, rainfall to change.
Extreme weather
When weather is significantly different from average weather. Lasting 1 day or more. eg. storms, heatwaves, coldness, flash floods and drought.
Microclimate
small area has a different climate to an area around it.
Physical - microclimate
trees create shade
Human - microclimate
patios and paved surfaces absorbing heat
shelter - microclimate
trees create shade
Surface - microclimate
colours of ground effect warming.
darker = warmer
Buildings - microclimate
increase or decrease wind speeds
Aspect - microclimate
direction where building is facing
facing south is warmer
Igneous - rocks
formed with molten rock
eg. granite and basalt
hard and durable
constructs buildings
Sedimentary - rocks
formed under the sea
eg. chalk and limestone
soft + squeezed
creates bricks
Metamorphic - rocks
formed by existing rock from heat pressure
eg. marble + slate
tough + durable
to build stone
Biosphere
the part of the Earth’s crust and water and atmosphere that supports life
Biome
large-scale community of organisms that has evolved from the interaction of the Earth’s spheres.
