Fauces
Fauces is an architectural term given by Vitruvius to narrow passages on either side of the tablinum, through which access could be obtained from the atrium to the peristylar court in the rear.
Vestibulum
A vestibule is an anteroom (antechamber) or small foyer leading into a larger space, such as a lobby, entrance hall, passage, etc., for the purpose of waiting, withholding the larger space view, reducing heat loss, providing space for outwear, etc.
Atrium
In architecture, an atrium (plural versions: atria in Latin or atriums in American English) is a large open air or skylight covered space surrounded by a building. Atria were a common feature in Ancient Roman dwellings, providing light and ventilation to the interior.
Compluvium
A space left unroofed over the court of a dwelling in Ancient Rome, through which the rain fell into the impluvium or cistern.
Impluvium
The square basin in the centre of the atrium of an ancient Roman house, which received rainwater from an opening in the roof.
Tablinium
A large, open room at the side of the peristyle farthest from the main entrance.
Peristyle
A row of columns surrounding a space within a building such as a court or internal garden or edging a veranda or porch.
Cubiculum
A small room, especially a bedroom, typically those small rooms found on the upper floor of a Roman house. A small room carved out of the wall of a catacomb, used as mortuary chapels, and in Roman times, for Christian worship.
Triclinium
A dining table with couches along three sides, used in ancient Rome.
Lararium
A shrine for the Lares.
Culina
The kitchen in an ancient Roman house, or domus.
Hortus
Enclosed garden.
