MDM Flashcards
AMI
Advanced Meter Infrastructure
Refers to a set of technologies including metering devices, headend collection engines, and the related networks that provided
mechanized meter-reading services via a two way communication. The technology supports demand side management, outage management, and other market management programs.
Represents the state-of-the-art in smart metering technology.
This type of technologies include vendors of: Badger, Itron, Echelon and NES communication node based infrastructure components.

AMR
Automated Meter Reading
Refers to the set of technologies and/or processing that support automated meter reading. In MDM (Meter Data Management), this is differentiated from Mobile meter reading because of the “automated” component of head-end data collection enabled by the drive-by component.
This was the industry’s first improvement over traditional walk-by meters.
Bill Determinants
These are the measurement values calculated for a period of time upon which billing is based. They are passed to the CIS system for calculation of billings that will be sent to customers. In MDM, these are always associated with the value of UOM/energy and do not reflect dollars or cents.
Can take the form of TOU (Time of Use)-mapped intervals of consumption, scalar consumption/readings, and/or interval consumption via measuring components.
Usage Transactions
A record in MDM of Bill Determinants that have been created for the CIS. This information is collected and is then exported to billing.
In the DB they are seen as:
- Usage Subscription
- Usage Transaction
- Usage Calculation Group
- Usage Rules
CBIS
Customer Billing
Information System
A Customer Billing Information System that supports the residential, commercial, and industrial customers of energy (electric only) for NC and SC. The primary function of the system is account management, including billing.
Contain values specific to customer records, account information, and Service Point Data.
CCF
Centi Cubic Feet
One hundred times the measurement of CF. This is the most common gas unit of measurement.
CMS
Customer Management System
A Customer Management System at Duke supporting the residential, commercial, and industrial customers of (electric and gas) for Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The primary function is account management including billing.
Contain values specific to customer records, account information, and Service Point Data.
Commissioning
This term is primarily used in reference to the start to finish process of ensuring a meter and all supporting items are set up to support the reception of reads as well as ROF (Remote Order Fulfillment) in most cases.
Communication Device
Gas
A module that is separate from the gas meter that is responsible for communicating data from the measurements taken by the gas meter.
An example of this data collection method would be a Badger module, or Itron Gas Module.
Communication Device
Gas
The piece of electric meter that is responsible for communicating data from the measurements it has taken. This is not separate from the electric meter - it is part of it.
Consumption
