MCN: Stages of Labor Flashcards
2 important events that take place during the first stage of labor
- cervical dilatation
- effacement
Phases of dilatation:
- Latent Phase
- Active
- Transition
Cervical dilatation in latent phase.
0-3 cm
Duration of labor in latent phase.
15-30 seconds
Heart disease in pregnancy
Gravido-Cardiac
Nursing intervention in gravido cardiac
Put weight in mother’s abdomen after delivery.
Frequency of labor in the latent phase.
10 minutes
Interval of the labor in latent phase.
Every 5-10 minutes
Description of labor in latent phase.
Mild regular contractions described as menstrual cramp.
Length of latent phase in prima and multi.
Primi- 6 hours
Multi- 4-5 hours
Maternal behavior in latent phase:
- talkative
- alert
- less anxious
- excited and happy
- in control
General nursing care in latent phase:
- rapport
- breathing technique
- provide needed info
- encourage participation
- facilitate position of comfort
- encourage ambulation
- offer ice chips
- voiding 1-2 hours
Discomfort present in latent phase:
- backache
- abdominal cramps
These will retard the progress of labor.
Full bladder and full bowel
Possible nursing diagnosis in latent phase:
- anxiety
- ineffective breathing pattern
- pain
- knowledge deficit
When do you take BP and FHT in the latent phase?
midway between contraction
Abnormal FHT suggests:
Fetal distress
Signs and symptoms of fetal distress
a. bradycardia
b. tachycardia
c. meconium stained in non breech
d. fetal trashing
NPO (nothing by mouth) is implemented in the latent phase because:
a. digestion delayed during labor
b. full stomach interfere with proper bearing down
c. may vomit and cause aspiration
Contraindication of enema
- vaginal bleeding
- abnormal fetal presentation/position
- ruptured BOW
- crowning
- premature labor
Purposes of doing enema
- Full bowel hinders the progress of labor
- expulsion of feces during 2nd stage predispose to infixation
- full bowel predispose postpartum discomfort
- allows more room for the descend of the fetal head in the pelvis
Nursing care on the dilation phase (latent phase)
- hospital admission
- assessment
- monitoring and evaluation
- emotional support
- health teaching
What are the things to be monitored and evaluated in the 1st stage of labor.
a. uterine contraction
b. BP
c. FHT
