MckenzieS Deck Flashcards
Multicellular
A term used to describe an organism that is made up of many cells
Microscope
An instrument that uses glass lenses to magnify an object
Bacteria
A large group of one celled organisms that sometimes cause disease. Bacteria is a plural word; the singular is bacterium
Unicellular
A term used to describe an organism that is made up of a single cell
Cell membrane
The semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
Cytoplasm
A thick solution that fills each cell and is enclosed by the cell membrane
Nucleus
The central part and most important part of an object, move ment, or group, forming the basis for its activity and growth.
Eukaryotic cell
Any organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes.
Prokaryotic cell
Any of the typically unicellular microorganism that lack a district nucleus and membrane bound organelles and that are classified as a kingdom or into two domains
Organelle
Is one of the several structures with specialized functions, suspended in the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell.
Cell wall
A rigid layer of a polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells plants, fungi, and bacteria. In the algae and higher plants, it consists mainly of cellulose
Chloroplast
A plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Mitochondria
An organelle found In a large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical process of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner layer being folded inward to form layers.
Specialization
Is a method of production where a business or area focuses on the production of a limited scope of products or services in order to gain greater degrees of productive efficiency within the entire system of businesses or areas
Tissue
Any of the district types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products
Organs
A part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function such as a heart or liver in humans
