A

19 Hollywood people were labelled communist - 10 pleaded the first amendment (right to free speech). All 10 were jailed for 1 year for contempt, and were blacklisted

Who was algar hiss

A

A government worker who was a key adviser to FDR in the 1930s and WW2. He was called up to a HUAC hearing. He denied the accusations but Richard Nixon (member of HUAC) claimed he leaked info to the USSR. Hiss was sentenced to 5 years.

A

Hoover gained fame - he was proved correct. People became scared that communism was everywhere, even in the highest government offices

A

They were put on trial in march 1951 for spying. The evidence against them was weak but they were found guilty and sentenced to their death. They were executed on the 19th June 1953

A

A term used to describe the anti-communist hysteria of the 1950s

A

The soviets were very powerful

Their intervention in many countries e.g. Korea, eastern bloc made the US think that the Soviet’s wanted world power

A

A

After the Hiss trial, he claimed to have a list of 205 communists who worked in the US government

Why did McCarthy rise to fame and what impact did he have on the 1952 election
He played on the fear of Americans. He was encouraged on by the republicans because he was able to attack the democrats in the 1952 election. The republicans won the election and Eisenhower (new president) made McCarthy the chairman of the government committee on operation of the senate

Bullying and aggressive questioning in hearings. He attacked high profile figures for publicity He fabricated evidence

Their reputation was ruined

Why did McCarthy lose his reputation
He began to accuse the army of- including the war general George Marshall (the maker of the Marshall plan). The army hearings were televised and the public saw his bullying tactics. People began to widely criticise McCarthy - the show who criticised him the most was the See It Now show.

Hysteria became so common. People were so scared of the ‘enemy from within’ so they began to feed the FBI info on people they suspected for being communist. Radicalism became much less common Left wing policies were barely made
