MCBoM- Bacteria Flashcards
Streptococcus pneumoniae
From upper respiratory tract
Causes pneumonia, meningitis, eye infections
Triggered by translocation to normally sterile site
Escherichia coli
From gut
Causes utis, septicaemia
Triggered by translocation to normally sterile site
Candida albicans
From gut (some mouth and vagina) Causes vaginosis, utis, oral candidosis, oesophageal candidosis, systemic infection Triggered by pregnancy, menstruation, diabetes, antibacterials, age, dentures, immunocompromised
Staphylococcus epidermidis
From skin
Causes prosthetic implant infections
Triggered by translocation to normally sterile site in presence of a substrate for biofilm formation
alpha- haemolytic streptococci
From mouth
Causes endocarditis
Triggered by translocation to normally sterile site
Staphylococcus Aureus
Nose and moist skin
Causes wound infections, eye infections, septicaemia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, pneumonia
Triggered by translocation to normally sterile site
Streptococci pyogenes
Necrotising fasciitis
Chlostridium spp.
Gas gangrene
Especially in IV drug users, necrosis leads to growth of anaerobic bacteria
Chlostridium tetanic
Tetanus
Bacteria grow in dead anaerobic tissue, release tetanospasmin toxin
Toxin binds to nerve ending, inhibits neurotransmitter release, blocks inhibition impulses, muscle spasm
