Exposition
The background information of a story.
Setting
Where and when the story takes place.
Conflict
The problem(s) in a story.
Internal Conflict
The problem of a story occurring with a character’s mind.
External Conflict
A conflict that is between a character and something else.
Rising Action
The second plot element of a story, building up more and more interest. All of the things that happen in the rising action lead to the climax.
Turning Point
A moment in the plot where something happens that changes the course of the story.
Falling Action
Everything after the climax. It brings the story from peak entertainment to a resolution.
Protagonist
The main, or one of the main characters, the person who tries to “fight” the antagonist. The protagonist can be called the “good guy.”
Antagonist
The person who is bad in a story; the bad guy. They also cause conflicts… most times.
Climax
The most exciting/intense part of a story.
Tone
The author’s attitude toward the topic.
Theme
The life lesson of a story; the main idea/what is being taught.
Mood
The emotion of the author in a story.
Author’s Purpose
The reason or intent of the author’s writing.
Entertain
To provide someone with amusement or enjoyment.
Persuade
To convince someone to do or believe something.
Inform
To give someone or multiple people information about something.
Noun
A person, place, or thing.
Verb
Something that a person can do; an action.
