- The decrease is predominantly due to a reduction in deaths due to direct (obstetric) causes

Causes of mothers’ deaths
A
- Two thirds of mothers died from medical and mental
health problems in pregnancy - Only one third from direct complications of pregnancy such as bleeding
- Three quarters of women who died had medical or
mental health problems before they became pregnant - Almost a quarter of women who died had
Sepsis (severe infection) - 1 in 11 of the women died from Flu. More than half of these women’s deaths could have been prevented by a flu jab
