  • 10 / 100 000 in 2009 - 2012
  • The decrease is predominantly due to a reduction in deaths due to direct (obstetric) causes
  • Death from hypertension is the lowest since 1950

Causes of mothers’ deaths

A
  • Two thirds of mothers died from medical and mental
    health problems in pregnancy
  • Only one third from direct complications of pregnancy such as bleeding
  • Three quarters of women who died had medical or
    mental health problems before they became pregnant
  • Almost a quarter of women who died had
    Sepsis (severe infection)
  • 1 in 11 of the women died from Flu. More than half of these women’s deaths could have been prevented by a flu jab
