  • widespread in the temperate regions of NA (arctotertiary distribution)
  • 3 are native in WI, and they are small shrubs or herbs.
  • A 3-merous pattern, which is common in early diverging plants.
  • most fruits tend to be berrylike.
  • japanese and european barberry are invasive, and also alternate hosts for wheat stem rust.

Podophyllum peltatum

  • forms huge clones of lobed, peltate leaves whose emergence from the ground looks a lot like umbrellas coming up.
  • “umbrella foot-leaf”, is also attacked by Puccinaceae rust.
  • solitary flowers on stems w/ 2 leaves, pistil is monocarpic and developes into a fleshy, apple-like berry.
