- widespread in the temperate regions of NA (arctotertiary distribution)
- 3 are native in WI, and they are small shrubs or herbs.
- A 3-merous pattern, which is common in early diverging plants.
- most fruits tend to be berrylike.
- japanese and european barberry are invasive, and also alternate hosts for wheat stem rust.

Podophyllum peltatum
- forms huge clones of lobed, peltate leaves whose emergence from the ground looks a lot like umbrellas coming up.
- “umbrella foot-leaf”, is also attacked by Puccinaceae rust.
- solitary flowers on stems w/ 2 leaves, pistil is monocarpic and developes into a fleshy, apple-like berry.

- mainly tropical and usually viney, with very disctinctive crescent-shaped seeds.
- leaves are almost peltate, palmately veined and lobed.
- dioecious, seperate carpels produce one-seeded drupes (fleshy, with one bony seed).
- super poison despite looking like wild grapes.

- capsule, dehiscent syncarpic fruit that is very gestalt/obvious.

- the “pair-of-lungs” shape of the leaves are also a dead giveaway.
