May exam Flashcards
What is the cable that connects the back of the eye to the brain called?
Optic nerve
What does the cornea do?
The cornea helps focus the light on the retina
Why are there rainbows in the sky sometimes?
White light enters a spectrum and when it splits up different colours are formed
What are some uses for Gamma radiation?
They sterilise fruit and veg or for medical instruments
What is a use for x-ray waves
For examining bones and airport security
What happens on the retina?
The retina is where the image forms / focuses
What does the lens do?
The lens completes the focusing process, muscles around it can make it thinner or thicker.
What does the iris do?
The iris makes the pupil larger or smaller depending on the amount of light projected onto the eye (Dark = large pupil)
What do sound waves require
Particles
Where do sound waves travel fastest and where do they travel slowest?
The travel fastest in solids and slowest in gases. They cannot travel in vacuums.
What are the 3 small bones inside the ear called?
Hammer, Anvil and the Stirrup
How do you calculate speed?
Distance/time
Distance divided by time
What units do you measure frequency with?
Hertz
What is the equation for pressure
Pressure = Force/Area
What material (solid, liquid or gas) does convection occur in?
Liquids and gases
What material (solid, liquid or gas) does conduction occur in?
Solids
What are the types of radiation?
Alpha (least penetrating)
Beta
Gamma (most penetrating)
What are some medical uses of radioactivity?
PET Scans
Radiotherapy
Medical tracers
Which type of radiation cannot be stopped by paper, led or aluminium?
Gamma
