Why is Art struggling to draw Francoise for his book?
So far all of Art’s character’s have been Jewish, Polish, German, and American. Francoise is orignally French, but converted to Jersulam for Art. He isn’t sure if he should draw her as a Jew, or make a new character for the French
Vladek calls and says he has had a heart attack. What really happened?
Vladek just wanted to make sure Art would call him back, so he could talk to Art about staying with him in the Bungalow for a while since Mala took some money and left Vladek that morning
How does Art feel about his “ghost brother” Richieu?
Art feels as though even though Richieu is deceased, his parents compare Art to him like Art is a pebble in their shoe and will never be the perfect son like Richieu because Art has an easier life than them
What does Mrs. Karp tell Art what happened with Vladek and Mala at the supermarket?
One time, Mrs. Karp was with Vladek and Mala at the supermarket and Mala had to take a hairbrush off her list because Vladek refused to buy Mala any personal items.
In Auschwitz, what does the Polish Priest tell Valdek about his number?
Vladek’s number began with 17 which was a good omen, ended with 13 which is the age a Jewish boy becomes a man, and the total of his number series equals 18 which is the Hebrew number for life. The Priest told Vladek that those were all good signs and Valdek would make it out of the Holocaust alive.
What is Mandelbaum’s situation in Auschwitz?
his pants were too big and he had no belt or string, so he held them up with one hand, One of his shoes was too big like a boat, but it was wearable. His other shoe was too small to wear, so he had the shoe in his other hand and walked to the snow with a bare foot. Because of these factors in his clothes, he ends up dropping his spoon and spilled his soup. His spoon was stolen and he was beaten when he asked for more soup.
How is Vladek able to help the Kapo?
Vladek was fluent in Polish and English and taught the Polish Kapo English
How does this benefit Vladek and, in turn, Mandlebaum?
The Kapo kept Vladek close to him, gave him new clothes, and warned him when the S.S. would chose people for work. Vladek was able to ask the Kapo for a favor for Mandlebaum to get a belt and new shoes as well as keep Mandlebaum close to him when the S.S. chose people for work.
What happens to Mandlebaum?
One of the times when the S.S. chose people for work, Mandlebaum was finally chosen and the they finished him off.
