What are the Silent Years?
400 years between the Old and New Testaments. There was no prophet or inspired writer during this time, and it is often referred to as the dark period.
What is the Gospel?
Generally means “Good News” and was originally applied to a message of victory in battle.
How many times does the word gospel appear in the NT?

When and to who was Matthew written?
Between 60 and 65 AD to the Jews.
What is Q?
From the German word “quelle” meaning source. Some say it accounts for 250 verses in Matthew and Luke, but not in Mark.
What are the two schools of Pharisaic thought?
Hillel and Shammai
Define Pharisees
Probably derived from an Aramaic term meaning “separate” and could be used to refer to the Pharisees as “separated ones”
Define Sadducees
Priestly aristocrats who theologically rejected almost everything the Pharisees believed. They did not believe in angels, spirits, the resurrection, the last judgement, life after death, divine providence, or a coming Messiah.
Define Essenes
A strict, highly disciplined community that rejected luxury, most lived in celibacy.
Define Zealots
agree with Pharisees but intolerant of being ruled politically by anyone other than God.
Define Apocalyptic Movement
Not a set group but a movement that produced vast material of special revelation (the book of Revelation is considered apocalyptic in genre).
What are the synoptic gospels?
Matthew, Mark, and Luke are synoptic meaning they have the same general stories that are often similar in sequence, though the details may be slightly different.
How is John’s gospel different than the synoptic gospels?
