- 2 doctors had to agree on it
- the law changed to 24 weeks in 1990
an abortion could be carried out if 2 doctors agreed…
- mothers life is at risk
- risk of the mother being physically or mentally ill
- risk to existing children
- substantial risk that the child may be born handicapped (quality of life argument)

arguments FOR abortion
- options differ as to when life begins
- every child has the right to be wanted. abortion saves children from being unwanted
- if a women is raped and becomes pregnant, having the baby would be too much trauma

- the unborn child has a right to live
- UN declaration states children need protection before and after birth
- if abortion is acceptable, where do we draw the line?
- the child could be adopted to parents who give the child a chance to live
