Matter Unit Flashcards
Physical Change
Properties that can be observed or measured, NOT how the substance behaves chemically.
Chemical Change
Properties that a material has that can change its identity.
Law of Conservation of Mass
the mass of any system, must remain the same; mass cannot be created or destroyed.
Matter
anything that has mass or takes up space
Element
Matter in which all atoms are the same; cannot be separated chemically or physically.
Compound
substance that is made of two or more elements in a repeating, fixed proportion
Homogeneous Mixture
Gas, liquid, or solid that is blended evenly so that parts are indistinguishable; can be separated physically.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture of different and easily distinguishable materials; can be separated physically
Colloid
A mixture that has larger particles that never settle and can be seen with the Tyndall Effect
Suspension
A mixture that has larger particles that settle
Density
A physical property of matter that is determined by mass and volume; and defined by how tightly packed the individual particles are
Definite
Not subject to change
Indefinite
subject to change
Kinetic Theory of Matter
The degree at which particles move is due to the amount of energy
Thermal Expansion
An increase in the size of a substance when the temperature is increased
