Matter (particles and kinetic theory) Flashcards
What is the Kinetic Theory of Matter?
The Kinetic Theory of Matter states that all matter is made up of particles (atoms and molecules) that are constantly moving.
What are the three main states of matter?
Solid, liquid, and gas.
How do particles behave in a solid?
Particles in a solid are closely packed together and vibrate in place but do not move from their positions.
How do particles behave in a liquid?
Particles in a liquid are close together but can move past one another, allowing the liquid to flow.
How do particles behave in a gas?
Particles in a gas are far apart and move freely at high speeds.
What is Brownian motion? (prob not to relevant but included it anyway)
The random movement of particles suspended in a fluid, resulting from their collision with fast-moving molecules in the fluid.
