Matter & Energy Flashcards
Define Matter
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas (+plasma)
Matter comes in two forms:
Substance and Mixture
What is the difference between a substance and a mixture?
A substance is a pure form of matter
A mixture consists of two separable substances
Two types of substances are:
Elements and Compounds
What is the difference between an element and a compound?
An element a building block of tbh universe, it’s made up of atoms and subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons)
A compound is 2 or more chemically combined elements
Two types of mixtures are:
homogenous and heterogenous
What’s the difference between a homogenous and heterogenous mixture?
Homogenous: looks like a substance , has a solvent and a solute
Heterogenous: looks like a mixture
Define miscible
miscible: 2 mutually soluble liquids
Two types of properties are:
Chemical and Physical
What distinguishes a chemical property?
Reactivity
Two types of physical properties are:
Extensive (dependent):
— mass, volume, heat,
Intensive (independent)
— specific heat, density, temperature, color
Formulas for degrees F and K
•F = 1.8C + 32
•K= C + 273
Formula for heat:
•q = m x Δt x sp.ht
All constants (such as specific heat) are what type of physical properties
Intensive
