what does WHMIS stand for?
workplace hazardous materials information system
yellow triangle means?
caution
orange diamond
warning
red octagon
danger
matter exists as a…
solid, liquid, gas
what is a chemical property?
a chemical property describes how a substance interacts with other substances. a chemical change will always result in a formation of different substance(s).
what is a physical change?
a physical change occurs when matter changes form, but not the chemical substance.
what is a chemical change?
in a chemical change, a chemical reaction occurs and add new substances or products are made/formed.
what is an element?
a material that cannot be broken down into any simpler substance
what is a compound?
when 2 or more elements combine chemically, they form a compound
what is a mechanical mixture?
the different substances that make up the mixture are visible to see
what is a solution?
the difference between substances are not separately visible. one substance is dissolved in another, creating what almost looks like a homogenous substance.
what is a suspension?
a suspension is a cloudy mixture in which tiny particles of one substance are held with one another. for example, tomato juice can be filtered out when it’s poured through a filter paper.
what is a colloid?
a colloid is a cloudy mixture, but the particles of the suspended substance are so small that they cannot be easily separated out from other substance. for example, milk & ketchup.
what are the electron shells?
electrons orbit the nucleus in different orbital ‘shells.’ these electron shells along with the nucleus create the whole structure that we call an atom. they basically just surround the nucleus.
