Matter Atoms Flashcards
What is mass?
Amount of matter that makes up an object
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
What is volume?
Amount of space matter takes up
What model do scientist use today?
Electron cloud model
What are the two distinct regions in the electron cloud model?
The nucleus and the electron cloud
What is the nucleus composed of?
Protons and neutrons
What is a proton?
Particle that has a positive charge
What is a neutron?
A particle that has no charge
What is an electron?
A particle that has a negative charge
How do scientists develop ideas today versus in the 5th century
Today we observe, measure and experiment
What do the ancient Greeks think all made was made from?
Earth, fire, air and water
What are the four states of matter?
Solid,liquid, gas, plasma
What is a solid?
Has definite shape and volume
Particles are close together and move slowly
What is a liquid?
Has definite volume but no shape
Particles move fast and break through each other
What is a gas?
Has no definite shape or volume
Takes the shape of the container
Particles move very fast
What is plasma?
Has no definite shape or volume
Particles can conduct electricity
Found in lightning and fire/not common on earth
How does temperature affect matter?
Temperature affects the force of attraction between particles
What is the melting point?
Process in which a solid is heated to its melting point a becomes a liquid.
What is the freezing point?
As liquids lose heat, the particles slow down. It can become a solid it it gets cold enough.
What is the boiling point?
Water particles speed up when it is heated up to the boiling point. Water changes into a gas called water vapor.
What is condensation?
A liquid formed when Water particles lose energy as they cool
What is a physical change?
Size shape or state of a substance changes, but it’s propeties stay the same. Ex. Shredding paper
What is a chemical change?
One or more substances change into completely new substances with different properties. Ex. Mixing water and concrete
