Matter and Materials Flashcards
Chapter 1 of chemistry
Matter
Anything that takes up space and has mass.
Macroscopic
Can be experienced by your senses.
Microscopic
Cannot be experienced by your senses
Mixtures
When 2 or more substances are combined but do not chemically react.
What are the 2 types of mixtures
Homogeneous = uniform composition
Heterogeneous = non-uniform composition
Alloy
A mixture of elements, one being a metal.
What is an example of an alloy
Steel = Iron and Carbon
Pure substance
A substance is made up of only one type of particle. Pure substances can be elements or compounds
Elements
Made of only one type of atom that cannot be broken down any further.
Compounds
2 or more substances that chemically react to form a new substance with new properties
